Nigerian Gov’t sues WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram owners, demands they pay N30bn
The Federal Government of Nigeria has filed a lawsuit against Meta, the parent company of popular social network Facebook, as well as its agent AT3 Resources Limited.
The lawsuit, which seeks N30 billion, was instituted by the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON).
ARCON, which is the top regulatory body in the country, has accused Meta of breaching advertising regulations and exposing various ads aimed at the Nigerian market through Facebook and Instagram without approval.
The regulatory body has deemed this practice as illegal, unlawful, and a violation of the country's advertising laws.
The court's approval for the lawsuit was made in response to an application filed by ARCON in October 2022
