Seun Kuti, the embattled Afrobeat musician, has had his gun license reportedly seized by the police. However, his counsel, Olumide Adeyinka-Fusika (SAN), has claimed that he is unaware of this development and stated that the seizure of the gun license is unrelated to the alleged assault on a police officer.
The incident began when Kuti allegedly attacked a police officer over threats made against him and his family. On Monday, Kuti turned himself in to the police for investigation and was subsequently detained. A Lagos State Magistrates' Court in Yaba later granted an order for him to remain in police custody for 48 hours, after which his bail would be considered.
During a search of Kuti's house in Ikeja on Tuesday, a source revealed that the police seized his gun license. The source further stated that the police are working on revoking the license. However, Kuti's lawyer expressed his lack of knowledge regarding the seizure of the license during the search. He emphasized that a gun license is merely a document authorizing possession of a firearm and questioned the connection between the alleged assault on a policeman and the seizure of the license.
Adeyinka-Fusika declined to provide information about Kuti's bail, as the 48-hour detention period is set to end on Thursday. Attempts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, for comments on the matter were reportedly unsuccessful at the time of this report.
